Different Types of Steel Buildings

Using steel buildings for offices, retail stores, sports complexes, parking garages and storage facilities is becoming the norm for many construction firms and property companies. The benefits of metal buildings are varied, ranging from environmental to financial. Generally, there are three different types of steel building that currently dot the landscape.
The first type of steel building is called a Quonset Hut steel building. The name comes from the Quonset Hut Military Base in Rhode Island, which is where this type of metal building was first introduced. Quonset Hut style buildings have an arched shape to them, with no interior columns, beams or posts to help support them. The building is completely self-supporting and the sheeting that is laid across the outside of the structure is basically the building. The Quonset Hut is the prototypical “metal barn” look type of metal building. The Quonset Hut is typically the least expensive of the three types of metal buildings and is easy to put up. It is also easy to make longer and can grow with the needs of the people using it. It is a good choice for a metal building in remote locations. A few downsides to the Quonset Hut style is that it can be quite costly to insulate and next to impossible to install doors on the sides of the building.
The second type of steel building is called a steel i-beam building. This is the most common metal building, and is also known as a “red iron” or “rigid frame” steel building. A steel i-beam building uses beams that resemble a capital letter “I” and a steel main frame truss as the support for the building. After being assembled on the ground, each i-beam truss is raised and bolted to the concrete foundation of the building. The i-beam style of metal building is usually available in several different colours and can be raised relatively quickly. There are few limitations in terms of width, which makes it possible to put up huge steel buildings, 100 to 200 feet wide. An i-beam style steel building can run into problems with interior condensation, and the choice of building shape is often limited to a simple box. A crane or other heavy equipment is usually required to get a steel i-beam building upright.
The third type of metal building is a hybrid steel/wood combination. Trusses are used similarly to i-beam steel buildings, and bolted in place the same way, but wood is also used horizontally in between the trusses. The wooden “purlins” and “girts” are attached with clips to the steel trusses after they have been raised and bolted in place in the concrete. Sheeting is fastened to the wood with screws to create the outside of a hybrid metal building. Hybrid style steel buildings are ideal if you plan to do any interior finishing, and you can use a variety of external finishes, including wood siding, vinyl siding, stucco or brick. You can also use traditional shingles instead of steel on the roof. A couple disadvantages to a hybrid metal building is that it may be more costly when erecting a smaller building this way, and a higher roof pitch can add to heating costs.

Ultimately, the choice of which type of steel building to use comes down to the user’s needs. Fortunately, continual developments in steel building technology are ensuring that the advantages of metal construction can be enjoyed while not sacrificing practicality, cost-effectiveness and attractiveness.

The Benefits of Steel Buildings

Many people and businesses often find themselves in need of a new building for such reasons as expanding business operations, creating more storage space, and for homeowners it is a great way to place to store items that are cluttering up the home. They also make a great garage. When building a new building, most people want a strong and durable building that can withstand harsh environmental conditions and require very little maintenance. Steel buildings are the ideal building solution.

Metal buildings, specifically steel buildings, have become a popular choice due to the many benefits steel buildings offer. Galvanized steel is an efficient and durable material that ensures a building that lasts a long time. These metal buildings can come pre-engineered so assembly is fast and easy. As well, they can come in different colors or you can get a plain steel building that you can paint the color of your choice. Often these buildings come coated with a baked enamel finish.

The benefits of metal buildings are numerous. The following is a list of the advantages of erecting a steel building:

Heavy Duty and Long Lasting: Metal buildings are much more durable, strong, and heavy-duty when compared to wooden buildings. The high grade steel ensures complete protection against environmental damage caused by snowstorms, rainfall causing flooding, and strong winds. They are also resistant to daily wear and tear so you don’t have to worry about dents in the building.

Vermin Resistant: Metal buildings are resistant to such vermin as mice, rats, ants, and termites, as these vermin cannot chew through the metal. Also mold and mildew cannot grow on the metal making the building much healthier.

Easy to Maintain: The durability of a high-grade metal makes metal buildings easy to maintain. There is very little maintenance required so you will not have high costs associated with maintaining building like you would with wooden buildings.

Easy to Assemble: Pre-engineered metal buildings are very fast and easy to assemble. They have been pre-welded and pre-drilled so it is just a matter of putting the pieces together. It also has no impact on the environment.

Improved Security: With a metal building, you will have a building that makes it more difficult to break into which makes it a great theft deterrent. You will just need a strong door lock and make sure your windows are locked when there is no one around.

Available in a Variety of Sizes and Designs: Steel buildings are available in a variety of designs, shapes, and sizes. You can get a metal building that meets you project needs such as a garage, dairy barn, storage for vehicles or boats, etc. The possibilities are endless.  As well, you will likely pay lower insurance premiums as steel buildings do not rot, are not easily damage, and are resistant to fire.

Economical: Because steel buildings are long lasting and durable, they can last for many years which make them an investment.

Metal buildings, particularly steel buildings, come with many advantages which makes these buildings the ideal choice. When you buy a pre-engineered customized building, you will benefit from a strong and long lasting building. Consider a steel building for your next project.

Metal Buildings – A ‘Green’ Building Solution

Today, many business owners and self employed individuals are looking for ways to grow their operations. Often this includes building new structures such as a warehouse, storage facility, agricultural building, etc. One type building that is both economical and durable is a metal building, particularly steel buildings.

Durable and Strong

A metal building for your particular project may be the ideal solution if you are looking to expand your operations. Pre-engineered metal buildings are fast and easy to construct, and they are strong, durable, and made of high quality steel that can resist environmental elements such as wind, heavy rain, and snow. Metal building can last for many years and require little maintenance.

Considerations when Choosing a Metal Building

The first factor to take into consideration is the building codes you will have to comply with when building your metal building. It is important to check with your local government to make sure you are aware of what you have to do to comply with their local laws and regulations regarding erecting a new building structure. It will save a lot of frustration you would feel if you were to build and then find out your metal building cannot be used as it does do not comply with building codes. For instance, you have to find out about the codes required for such environmental elements as high snow loads, high wind loads such as if you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, and codes regarding flooding if you live in an area that sees a lot of tropical storms. As well, there may be codes you have to meet if you live in an area with a lot of seismic activity.

Fortunately, a metal building made of the highest quality steel will meet or exceed most local building regulations. It is important to have a blue print illustrating where you plan to erect your steel building so that the company erecting it will be able to erect it properly to meet all codes and regulations. A full service metal building company that does the Engineer Certified Drawings is very beneficial. In addition, a company that provides full-service design services and technical assistance will help ensure your metal building is erected properly so that no issues arise that may be problematic.

Benefits of Pre-engineered Metal Buildings

Most metal building experts recommend that people hire a qualified metal building erector to assemble a metal building. If you want to erect the metal building yourself, make sure that the structure is completely pre-engineered so that you do not have to cut and weld. As well, having a supportive team of customer service representatives is important as they can help you with any issues that may arise as you assemble the building.

When purchased correctly, pre-engineered steel buildings can save you money and time. When searching for a quality metal building company, it is important to do your research and ask lots of questions so you will make the best decision when it the time comes to buy your metal building.

Future Steel Buildings

Most structures around the world are constructed using metals for durability purposes. One such metal that has gained prominence is steel. It is an alloy of iron and carbon in varying amounts, with iron being in large quantities. The quantity of carbon is dependent on the grades expected, hence the more the amounts the higher the quality. The carbon content is between 0.2% and 2.1%. Other materials used for this purpose are manganese, tungsten and chromium, which act as hardeners. There are many uses of steel buildings and structures in the world, and it is important to consider their many characteristics.

Planes need hangars and doors, which are often made from steel. The doors undergo manufacturing and subsequent installation, and can not only be manual but also electric. Hangars on the other hand are used for protection against harsh weather conditions and ultra violet light from the sun. In addition, they contain built in permanent docks, garages or even offices. Thus, they provide environments that are conducive for the safety docking of planes.

Industries and factories need to be strongly built to match their purposes. In addition to being an ideal material for manufacturing, goods can also be stored within the storage facilities of the industries, awaiting transportation. Due to its durability and its inherent nature to withstand corrosion, steel is the most preferred for the construction of these structures. Other facilities housed within the industries are areas for docking, transport facilities and different business departments.

Undoubtedly, the largest storage facilities are warehouses. These are mostly found in industrial areas of big towns and cities. More often than not, they are used by exporters, transport businesses and importers for efficient storage of stocks prior to delivery. As a precaution, they ought to be able to withstand high wind speeds or seismic loads. This underlines the need for durability and efficiency in extreme weather conditions.

Commercial buildings are essential and cannot go unmentioned. With the industrialization rate at an all-time maximum, there is an increasing need for better delivery of services and goods. Commercial structures also include shopping malls, supermarkets, wholesales and stores with a retail purpose. Offices may also be included in this subgroup. Many people would rather do their purchases from such outlets given the level of convenience that they have.

To facilitate passage over steep places, bridges have to be constructed. The biggest highway bridges can incorporate carriageways ranging from two to even eight lanes. Road and contractor bridges are meant for trucks. The former is so small that they carry just minor and feeder roads. Contractor bridges are meant for heavier loads that cannot be sustained by smaller structures. Other types are made to be used by pedestrians, bicycles, motor bicycles and trains. They should be firm, lest they collapse under the weight of the loads.

Apart from the above uses, there are other numerous ways that steel is of essence in society. It can be utilized to put up stadiums and grandstands. Churches and storey car parks are erected too. Evidently, steel buildings and structures have quite a number of functions in society. The two major facts that make it popular are the fact that it is very durable and resistance to corrosion. Clearly, it would be hard to do without steel.

Future Steel Buildings

Steel buildings and structures are state-of-the-art engineered constructions made from metal running through its framework. They may be specially designed to fit well with pre-existing environmental features. These metal based constructions are often used as an extra garage or some other storage facility, which may house boats, vehicles, equipment and other such items. They are also used on farms, as well as office and living space. Whatever the reason is for using a metal building structure, one can be sure to get quality for one’s hard earned money.

Due to its metal designs, these constructions help to protect the storage contents from the wear and tear effects of the elements. After many years of use, however, the structure may begin to rust. Some companies that sell these edifices often guarantee an optimum use of the materials for a specific amount of time. For example, one may be able to expect no rust or wearing of paint for the first five years. Should this not be the case, consumers may be recompensed with a full refund or some sort of replacement. As such, customers should bear this in mind when using these constructs.

Steel buildings and structures vary in size, shape and colours. In size, they range from small (and virtually self constructable) to large and requiring professional assistance in construction. There are only two basic shapes – namely arched (or rounded toward the ceiling) and square or straight-walled with sharp edges at the roofing. There are many colours available, and these choices are generally left to the consumer to decide which colour is most suited for their needs. The latter is especially true in the cases of customized steel buildings.

The many advantages of using edifices of this nature include, having a structure that is aesthetically pleasing – particularly where constructions are specially designed to fit requirements. Sometimes, these constructs are low maintenance, and by extension, have very low maintenance costs.

Steel is also non-combustible. This makes the structure of steel buildings stronger and more durable for a longer period of time than wood. Also, this alloy is not susceptible to common predators such as termites. In addition to being durable, these steel buildings and structures are also very functional. Despite the numerous advantages, there are also some disadvantages to take into consideration before investing in these constructions. For example, steel is 310 times more effective at conducting heat than wood. As such, using a building made from said material will require a more effective cooling system, so the space needs to be kept at a certain temperature. As such, the energy bills of running air conditioners may be increased. Also, any errors in design can allow for metal corrosion and consequently a shorter lifespan than would be preferred.

Steel buildings and structures are appreciated mostly for the usability it offers. This is especially true in cases of a smaller edifice which comes pre-fabricated and easily constructed. It is an innovative way for many persons to create extra space that may be needed for a myriad of purposes.
